Family Volunteer Opportunities & Ways to Give in SCV This October

By Katie Grant September 30, 2026

October is packed with pumpkins, costumes, and candy, and it's also one of the best months of the year to give back as a family. Before the holiday rush kicks in, local nonprofits need extra hands, and our kids get a front-row seat to what it looks like to take care of the community we all share.

Whether you have a whole Saturday or just a spare hour, here are some of the best ways for SCV families to volunteer and give this month.

Family Volunteer Opportunities This October

Walk to End Alzheimer's: Santa Clarita Valley.

When: Saturday, October 3. Where: Bridgeport Park, 23670 Newhall Ranch Rd., Valencia.

Best for: Teens 15+ as volunteers; all ages as walkers.

Kick off the month by helping at one of the valley's biggest community walks. Volunteers are needed for registration and check-in, the Promise Garden, route monitoring, water stations, setup and breakdown, and cheering on participants. Volunteers must be 15 or older, but younger kids can join the fun by walking alongside you, and the event is wheelchair accessible. Sign up through the volunteer listing on Idealist.

Make a Difference Day

When: Saturday, October 24. Where: Project sites across Santa Clarita

Best for: All ages (minors register under a parent's account)

This is the big one for families! The City of Santa Clarita's fourth annual Make a Difference Day offers 25 City and nonprofit projects to choose from. Families can help along the Chuck Pontius Commuter Rail Trail, beautify animal enclosures at William S. Hart Park (a guaranteed kid favorite), sort donations with the Rise Foundation, spruce up a space at the Boys & Girls Club, or deep clean the Finally Family Homes Oasis Center.

Spots are limited, so register early at SantaClaritaVolunteers.com
Kids under 18 must be registered under a parent or guardian's account. Questions? Email Volunteers@SantaClarita.gov.

Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry

When: Ongoing, Monday through Thursday and Saturday Where: 24133 Railroad Ave., Newhall

Best for: All ages (under 15 with an adult)

The SCV Food Pantry serves more than 7,000 of our neighbors every month, and volunteers of any age are welcome to help sort, label, bag, and hand out food. Kids under 15 just need to come with an adult. Fill out an application at scvfoodpantry.org or call (661) 255-5001.

Castaic Animal Care Center

Where: Castaic Best for: Animal-loving kids of any age (through donations)

If your crew loves animals, this one's for you. Regular volunteers at the shelter walk dogs, socialize cats, do laundry, and help at mobile adoption events. Check with the center about age requirements for hands-on volunteering. Even little ones can help by picking out items from the shelter's Amazon wish list, like toys, treats, beds, and leashes.

Bridge to Home

Where: Santa Clarita Best for: Families looking for an ongoing commitment

Bridge to Home supports neighbors experiencing homelessness and offers volunteer roles in shelter support, client services, youth engagement, fundraising events, and more. They're flexible about schedules and appreciate any amount of time. Learn more at btohome.org/volunteer-opportunities.

More Ways to Give This October

Can't commit to a volunteer shift? No problem. Here are easy ways to give back on your own schedule.

  • Host a "Trick-or-Treat for the Pantry" food drive. The SCV Food Pantry is looking for community members to organize fall food drives. Turn your class Halloween party, scout meeting, or neighborhood trunk-or-treat into a collection spot for their most-needed items: mac and cheese, peanut butter, tuna, canned meat, canned tomatoes, and pasta.
  • Pass along outgrown costumes. Gently used costumes can make another kid's Halloween. Organize a costume swap with your school or mom group, or donate them to a local thrift store that supports a cause you love.
  • Share the Halloween candy haul. Some organizations collect extra Halloween candy for care packages for troops and first responders. Let your kids pick a pile to donate, and check each organization's site for current drop-off details.
  • Shop a wish list together. Sit down with your kids and pick items from the Castaic Animal Care Center's Amazon wish list. It's a sweet way for little ones to feel part of the giving.
  • Spread kindness close to home. Make cards for residents at a local senior living community, bake treats for a neighbor, or leave a thank-you note and snacks for your mail carrier or sanitation workers.

Tips for Volunteering With Kids

  • Check age requirements first. Many opportunities welcome kids with a parent, but some have minimum ages. It saves a meltdown at check-in.
  • Talk about the "why" beforehand. A quick chat about who you're helping makes the experience more meaningful, even for little ones.
  • Start small. A two-hour shift is plenty for younger kids. End on a high note, and they'll want to go back.
  • Let kids have a say. Offer a few choices and let them pick the cause. Animals, parks, and food are usually big hits.
  • Reflect afterward. Ask what they liked, what surprised them, and what they'd want to do next time.

Let's Give Back Together, SCV!

The best part of volunteering as a family? Kids learn that they don't have to be grown-ups to make a real difference. A few hours together this October can plant a seed that lasts a lifetime.

Know of a local nonprofit or family-friendly volunteer opportunity we should share? We'd love to hear about it! Email katieg@macaronikid.com, and we may feature it in an upcoming issue.

Dates and details can change, so please confirm directly with each organization before heading out.
