If it feels like summer refuses to let go, you're not imagining it — the SCV is still seeing triple-digit temps, even as we start talking pumpkins and fall festivals. Until things cool down for real, here's how to keep your family safe, comfortable, and (dare we say) having fun despite the heat.
Heat Safety Basics for Families
Extreme heat isn't just uncomfortable — it can be dangerous, especially for little ones. A few reminders as we push through these hot days:
- Hydrate often. Don't wait until kids say they're thirsty — offer water regularly throughout the day, especially before and after outdoor play.
- Never leave kids or pets in a parked car. Not even for a minute — car interiors can reach dangerous temperatures within minutes, even with windows cracked.
- Time outdoor activities wisely. Aim for early morning or evening if you need to be outside, and avoid peak heat between 12–4 p.m.
- Dress for the heat. Light-colored, breathable clothing and a wide-brim hat go a long way.
- Know the warning signs. Heavy sweating, dizziness, headache, nausea, or flushed skin can signal heat exhaustion. Move to a cool area, hydrate, and seek medical help if symptoms worsen or your child stops sweating and becomes confused — that can indicate heat stroke, a medical emergency.
- Sunscreen, reapplied often. Especially if you're near water.
Where to Cool Off Around the SCV
The good news? We've got no shortage of indoor options for beating the heat as a family — some paid, some totally free.
Free Indoor Spots to Beat the Heat
If you're looking to cool off without spending a dime, the SCV has you covered:
Santa Clarita Public Libraries — With locations in Old Town Newhall, Canyon Country (Jo Anne Darcy Library), and Valencia, plus L.A. County branches in Stevenson Ranch and Castaic, our libraries are a free, air-conditioned haven. Most host regular storytimes, clubs (coding, anime, teen board games), and rotating art exhibits — check santaclaritalibrary.com or lacountylibrary.org for the week's activities.
Westfield Valencia Town Center — This isn't just a mall — it's a genuinely great free hangout. Besides air-conditioned indoor shopping and dining, there's a Family Lounge and a kids' PlaySpace area where little ones can burn off energy while you catch a break. No purchase necessary to enjoy the AC and the people-watching.
Placerita Canyon Nature Center Visitor Center — While the trails outside are definitely not heat-friendly right now, the indoor nature center and museum exhibits are free, air-conditioned, and a great way to sneak in some learning.
Paid Indoor Options Worth the Splurge
If you don't mind spending a little, the SCV has plenty of other air-conditioned spots to keep the family entertained:
Movies — A classic heat-day escape! A few ways to save:
- Regal Edwards Valencia & Regal Edwards Canyon Country typically offer a discounted Value Day on Tuesdays for new releases, and AMC frequently offers matinee pricing for shows before 4 p.m. (excluding Tuesday/Wednesday), plus deeper discounts for AMC Stubs members. Pricing and promo days change often, so check each theater's app or website before you go.
- Laemmle Theatre in the Arts & Entertainment District is a great option for indie and family-friendly films in a smaller, modern setting.
The Cube – Ice and Entertainment Center (27745 North Smyth Drive, Valencia) — Public ice skating sessions on one of three rinks is about as cool as the SCV gets, literally. A fun, unique way to beat triple-digit heat.
MB2 Entertainment — Bowling, laser tag, arcade games, VR, axe throwing, and mini golf all under one roof (7 acres of indoor/outdoor space). Great for a family outing or a group celebration.
Valencia Lanes & Santa Clarita Lanes — Both offer bowling plus arcade games for a classic indoor family activity.
Billy Beez — A 20,000-square-foot indoor play park with slides, towers, ball blasters, and trampolines — great for younger kids with energy to burn.
Scooter's Jungle — Another solid indoor play center offering open play, birthday parties, and pizza.
Sky Zone Santa Clarita — This indoor trampoline park in Valencia is a perfect heat-day outing: wall-to-wall trampolines, foam pits, dodgeball courts, and a dedicated Kid Zone for younger jumpers, all in the air conditioning. Bonus: there's an adult lounge with Wi-Fi if you need a break while the kids burn off energy. (Admission required.)
Note: pricing, hours, and promotions for all of the above change frequently — we recommend confirming details directly with each venue before heading out.
Our Advice? Embrace the Indoor Days
We know it's hard to say goodbye to pool days and hello to flannel weather when it's still 100+ degrees outside — but that's SCV life! Use these last hot weeks to hit up an indoor favorite, stay hydrated, and know that fall (the real fall) is on its way.
Stay cool, SCV families! 🧊
